Endometriosis: When period pain is more than “just period pain” 🌿
Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, commonly affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic lining. It can cause inflammation, scarring and adhesions.
Some women may have no symptoms, while others experience:
🔸 Severe period pain
🔸 Heavy or prolonged bleeding
🔸 Chronic pelvic pain
🔸 Pain during intercourse
🔸 Bloating and bowel/bladder symptoms
🔸 Difficulty conceiving in some cases
🩺 Diagnosis usually begins with a detailed history and pelvic examination, along with transvaginal ultrasound. MRI may be useful in selected cases. Laparoscopy may be considered when diagnosis or treatment requires it.
💊 Treatment is individualised. It may include pain relief, hormonal treatment and surgery in selected patients.
And one of the most important things to remember: the treatment plan changes depending on whether pregnancy is a goal now, later, or not at all. Fertility preservation and pregnancy plans should always be considered before choosing treatment.
✨ You don't have to normalise debilitating period pain.
If your periods are affecting your quality of life, talk to your gynaecologist. Early evaluation can make a difference.
